Bar/Bat Mitzvah at CBS

Planning for the
Bar (or
Bat)
Mitzvah begins long before your child begins learning his or her
Haftarah. It begins back at the beginning of Hebrew School, or in the early grades at Solomon Schechter Day School. Gaining comfort with the Hebrew, the chanting of prayers, attending services are all part of the process.
But in fifth grade or so, a couple of years before your son or daughter's 13th birthday, you will get "The Date." Now what?
Start off by taking a look at
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Planning Guide CBS' . It will give you a good overview of what to expect and when. Print it out and keep it on the refrigerator!
Come to services on
Shabbat morning, or any other time. Coming to services is the best way for the entire family to approach the
Bar or
BatMitzvah date with confidence. Your child will learn much about the service, its logistics and the prayers. Choose to attend one of our special
Family-Friendly Alternative Services if you prefer
About a year before your
simcha, you and your child will attend a nine-week class called
"Trope Class". We hold
TropeClass on Sunday mornings, meeting from 8:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Parents and kids attend a learners'
minyan followed (usually) by brunch. After brunch the kids study with Ritual Director Naomi Weiss and parents study with Rabbi Wolkin.
