CBS University Classes

The following classes will begin in September and October:

Sunday School For Adults: Back to the Basics of Judaism with the Jewish Book of Why

All are welcome to this course in the fundamentals of Judaism using a book written in a question and answer format.  Organized by topic, all of the holidays and Shabbat, the life cycle from birth to death, the synagogue and a host of other topics are covered in this easy-to-read and understand book by Alfred J. Kolatch.  The class will meet weekly but don't worry if you miss a week here or there.  Because of the way the book is set up, you won't fall behind.  You can join the class at any time.  There will be ample opportunity to ask your own questions as well. And don't worry-we won't run out of material.  There is a second Jewish Book of Why.

Bible: Back To The Text And Its/our Own Commentaries

We will examine the text and “its” commentaries, those of rabbinic scholars from medieval to modern The study would, however, not be complete without adding “our own” commentaries through Q and A, and the lively discussion, which accompanies it. No prerequisites–even if you have never been in the class, you will quickly find your place and become part of the study and discussion.

Jewish News Of The World In Review
After so many years, the enthusiasm and intensity continue. This class has been tackling the problems of the world as they impact the Jewish people. We analyze them and try to solve them. We often come away with more questions than answers but we have a great time trying. We all come away with more information and new ideas and insights from sharing with each other. Rabbi Wolkin draws on a variety of sources, including but not limited to The New York Times, The London Jewish Chronicle, The Chicago Jewish News and Star. Students are encouraged to bring in articles and stories. The volume of voices sometimes gets a bit loud, but that’s all part of the colorful charm of the class. The news isn’t always good, but we have tried to end each class with an upbeat story.
